"First of all, I would like to congratulate Rodri because he has had an exceptional tournament. He is a player who brings intelligence, balance and consistency to every team he plays for. Winning an individual award at a World Cup is something every player should be proud of.
Having said that, if you ask me who I would have voted for, my choice would have been Lionel Messi. What Messi has done once again at this stage of his career is extraordinary. He carried the responsibility of leading Argentina in the biggest competition in football and continued to make the difference in the decisive moments.
The greatest players are judged not only by their statistics, but by their influence on the game. Messi has that rare ability to change the psychology of both his teammates and his opponents. When he is on the pitch, everyone believes something special can happen.
Throughout this tournament, whenever Argentina needed inspiration, leadership or a moment of quality, Messi was there. That, for me, is what the Best Player award should recognise,the player who leaves the biggest mark on the competition.
Football will always debate these decisions because individual awards are subjective, and that is what makes them so fascinating. Rodri deserves enormous respect for what he has achieved, but if I had one vote, it would have gone to Lionel Messi.
Years from now, people will remember Messi's performances, his leadership and the way he inspired an entire nation once again. That is why I believe he deserved to leave this World Cup with the Golden Ball."
