Manchester United stats that prove Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has delivered on youth promise
Manchester United have handed Premier League appearances to more academy graduates this season than any other club in the division.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has regularly spoken about his faith in youth and his desire to promote stars from the club’s fabled youth system, with Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams the main beneficiaries of that policy this season so far. James Garner, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong have also featured in the Premier League this term.
There are in fact 11 homegrown United players who have played in the Premier League this season. As well as Greenwood, Williams, Chong, Garner and Gomes, Axel Tuanzebe, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have all featured.
It puts United on top, ahead of Chelsea’s 10 academy graduates (Tammy Abraham, Faustino Anjorin, Andreas Christensen, Billy Gilour, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Armando Broja and Tariq Lamptey).
Next up are Arsenal with seven and Tottenham with six.
United also top the numbers in terms of total appearances this season, with 137 to Chelsea’s 124 - although Frank Lampard has handed more starts to his youngsters (97 to 87).
United lead the way in terms of goals, mainly thanks to Rashford’s tally of 14 for the season. United academy graduates have scored 25 goals this term.
Earlier this season, United’s head of first-team development Nicky Butt revealed why the current academy batch were fortunate to have someone like Solskjaer in charge of the senior squad.
“He’s really approachable, knows the club inside out, what it takes to be a footballer here,” Butt said of Solskjaer.
“Even though he wasn’t an academy member, he came as a very young boy and was lost, didn’t know what to do and embraced the club and ended up becoming one of the family.
“We’re fortunate at the minute that Ole is in the hot seat. He’s coached in the academy, he did his coaching badges with academy players and coaches, so he knows pretty much everybody right down to the Under-12s in the club and that can only be beneficial.”
