Manchester United are closing in on completing the signing of their number one transfer target this summer, Atletico Madrid star Antoine Greizmann.
The Manchester Evening News report that the deal is pretty much a formality and that it is much more a case of when rather than if a deal will be agreed.
The newspaper has reported that the deal would cost United in the region of £86 million. This would put the French attacker’s move right up there in terms of football’s all-time most expensive transfers, joining the likes of Gareth Bale (£85m from Tottenham to Real Madrid) and Griezmann’s countryman Paul Pogba (£89m from Juventus to Manchester United).
The fee will not prove to be an issue for the Red Devils though, with Jose Mourinho being heavily backed in the upcoming transfer window by the United board to build a Premier League-winning side. In addition to this, a key factor in this ongoing saga is that Atletico will not be able to stop their star man’s departure once the €100 million buy out clause in his contract is met.
The 26-year-old Atletico number seven is a fan favourite at the Vincente Calderon and has remained coy over the speculation linking him with a switch to Old Trafford, but the Manchester Evening News report that sources close to the player believe the deal is near completion.
Greizmann would prove to be an awesome addition to the Premier League and certainly United’s title ambitions for next season. Having been top scorer at Euro 2016 as well as Player of the Tournament at last summer’s tournament in France, he is already after notching 22 goals and eleven assists in all competitions for Atletico this season.
Greizmann finished third, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, in the voting for last year’s Ballon d’Or.
With rumours circulating that Wayne Rooney could be about to bring an end to the Manchester United chapter of his career, United will need to bolster their attacking options.
Mourinho will be hoping that Greizmann can relieve the heavy reliance on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is set to stay with United for another season, to be a match-winner for his side in a genuine title challenge next season.
